Where we are: Monterosso |
In
Monterosso the light of sunset sets the mountain on fire - is it life or a
painting by Rubaldo Merello (1872-1922)? For sure, it is a wonder we leave to
your eyes and soul. Welcome to a land of poetry.
Leave the railway station and start walking to the east. Towards Levanto you
will get to a villa – the family summer residence of poet (and 1975 Nobel prize
winner) Eugenio Montale, who used to sing the amazement of local settings, the
hard work of man, the blaze of colours.
If
you turn your back to the sea, there is a rural world to discover, made of
vineyards, hills, olive groves and lemon trees (citrus fruits are celebrated in
May). Boats lie on the seashore, the silent witnesses of the historical and
economical relationship with the sea – the strongest of links, fishing is a
feast of anchovies, tuna fish and remarkable crustaceans. Do find time to
explore the old centre, a maze of carruggi, stairways and tiny piazzas – the
reign of indolent cats and chatting seniors -, not to forget old fashioned
botteghe specializing in local delicatessen (vegetables in oil, olive paste,
limoncino…).
Way up, the santuario di Soviore towers over the village. On August
14th it is the seat of a hearty fair: savoury rice pie (red with tomato sauce)
tempt your palate as your trekking (or biking) instinct is tantalized by the
paths of the Cinque Terre, settings in green and blue casting their spell on
your heart and mind.… |
